Make Meaning
Once you come up
with running and launching a new business; what words appear in your thoughts?
Uniqueness? Success? Making money? Profit?
Probably, such words come to your mind, however, based on the speech by Guy Kawasaki who
assists a number of successful technology companies; Innovation, Motivation,
and Success are the major elements which a successful entrepreneur must take
advantage of them.
Actually, recently
I saw a great talk about The art of innovation by Guy Kawasaki which was so
interesting and instructive for me, so I decided to share it on my blog.
During his
presentation, he started with talking over the theme of creating which can be
one of the critical factors of innovation. He broke down the art of innovation
into 11 sections including:
- Having the desire to make meaning versus make money
- Making a mantra
- Jumping to the next curve
- Rolling the dice
- Don’t worry be crappy
- Let 100 flowers blossom
- Polarize people
- Churn baby churn
- Niche Thyself
- Perfect your pitch
- Don’t let the bozos grind you down
I really like his first tip about making meaning which means that having a desire to change
the world and as he said, when we happen to change the world, so we also probably
make a profit. In my point of view, a company or an innovator won’t make money
without having a purpose or meaning, and getting failed can be expected without
purpose. Therefore, as the first step towards innovation, it would be
significant to determine how we can make meaning and change the world.
Do I Want To Make Meaning?
According to Kawasaki,
the meaning is not just about power, profit, reputation and so on. He is saying
the sense of “meaning” is associated with making the world a better place.
For doing this we
have 2 different ways:
1- Creating, developing, and increasing
something that’s good like Macintosh which has been increasing creativity and
efficiency among the people.
2- Stopping, removing, or reducing something
that’s bad like Tesla is trying to reduce air pollution by producing electric
cars.
Thus, from this point on we should ask ourselves how we can make meaning, and by
doing this, we will be moving in the right way.
